COMMUNITY OVERVIEW
Maple Ridge is located approximately
30 miles east of Vancouver on the north shore of the Fraser River. The total land
mass of Maple Ridge consists of 66,000 acres or 103 square miles of land, 11,023
acres of which lie within the Agricultural Land Reserve designation. The remaining
lands support a wide variety of land uses ranging from small rural farms to high
density residential apartments, including industrial and a wide variety of commercial
and recreational uses.
Outdoor recreation abounds in Maple Ridge
with over 33 parks consisting of 315 acres of publicly owned lands. Additional parks include
Kanaka Regional Park with 1,050 acres and Golden Ears Provincial Park consisting of 215
Square miles. Alouette Lake, located within Golden Ears Provincial Park, attracts thousands
of tourists annually who enjoy a wide variety of outdoor recreation.
Maple Ridge
boasts one of the largest horse populations per capita in
Western Canada and has a trail network of over 20
miles.
The
municipality consists of seven historical areas - Haney,
Albion, Hammond, Yennadon, Ruskin, Whonnock and Webster's
Corner - of which Haney boasts the largest commercial core
with five shopping centres ranging in sizes of approximately
50,000 square feet to 200,000 square feet.
Over the past
decade Maple Ridge has been one of the fastest growing
municipalities within the Greater Vancouver Regional
District (GVRD). Growth rates for the GVRD have averaged
2.7% annually, with growth rates for Maple Ridge averaging
nearly 5% over the last 10 years.
