COMMUNITY OVERVIEW

New Westminster, one of the smallest communities in the Lower Mainland, is said by locals to be the finest. New Westminster has long been known as "The Royal City" because Queen Victoria herself chose the name after her favourite part of London.

New Westminster is British Columbia's oldest city. Although Vancouver developed into the province's largest city, New Westminster retained its history and charm and today is still a hub of business and commerce for the entire Greater Vancouver area.

New Westminster has beautiful character homes, modest bungalows and a great variety of apartment and townhouse properties. It is an area that has much to offer its residents with its outstanding community spirit and genuine neighbourhood feeling. New Westminster has its own newspaper, its own police force, great restaurants, attractive parks, exceptional recreation programs, three live theatres and five Skytrain stations. At the same time, it is only half an hour drive to downtown Vancouver, the ski hills, beaches and lakes.

The proximity to the United States border crossings, and location on a major railroad and water routes, make it ideal for industry and business. In addition there are 5 Skytrain stations across New Westminster, any of which will bring a passenger downtown in approximately 30 minutes.

New Westminster has eight elementary schools, two middle schools (one being late French Emersion) and one high school. These schools are evenly situated throughout the community. There are two public universities within a half hour of the city; The University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University, as well as Douglas College in New Westminster, and many other community colleges nearby.
